How the eBay estimate works
For US sellers without an eBay Store, eBay calculates a final value fee on the total amount of the sale: item price, shipping charged, sales tax, and certain other amounts. The model also adds the $0.30 per-order fee for totals of $10 or less, or $0.40 above $10.
This model covers common non-Store categories. It excludes Store subscription rates, optional listing upgrades, international fees, below-standard performance fees, dispute fees, refunds, and special threshold rules for some categories.
Common US fee inputs
| Fee | Typical rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Final value — most categories | 13.6% to $7,500; 2.35% above | Calculated per item on total amount of sale |
| Per order | $0.30 or $0.40 | $0.30 at $10 or less; $0.40 above $10 |
| Insertion | $0.35 | Most casual sellers receive 250 zero-insertion listings monthly |
| Promoted Listings | Your selected rate | Applies when an eligible promoted sale is attributed |
Two quick examples
eBay calculates percentage fees on the buyer’s $55 checkout in this example, while your revenue remains the item and shipping charged.
The lower $0.30 order fee helps slightly, but percentage fees plus real postage can make a low-price item unprofitable.
eBay fee calculator FAQ
Does eBay charge a final value fee on sales tax?
Yes. For the standard US fee schedule, eBay says the total amount of the sale includes item price, shipping, sales tax, and other applicable fees.
Does this include payment processing?
eBay’s standard final value fee structure includes payments; there is no separate third-party payment-processing line in this model.
Why is shipping entered twice?
“Shipping charged” is revenue collected from the buyer and part of eBay’s fee base. “Your postage” is the actual amount you pay to fulfill the order.
How should I use the minimum item price?
Use it as an offer floor for the assumptions entered above. It holds buyer shipping and sales tax constant while solving for the lowest cent-level item price that reaches your target profit.
Is the break-even Promoted Listings rate a recommended rate?
No. It is the estimated zero-profit ceiling at the current price and costs. A sustainable rate must be lower enough to leave your required profit and allow for returns or other unmodeled costs.
Do eBay Store subscribers pay the same rate?
No. Store subscribers can receive different allowances and category rates. This page models the standard schedule for sellers without a Store.
When is the insertion fee charged?
Most casual sellers receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings monthly. Check the box if this listing falls outside your allowance or another insertion charge applies.
